HENRY CHESBROUGH
Before becoming Executive Director of the Center for Open Innovation at the University of California, Haas School of Business, Henry worked for Bain and Company in Boston as Associate Consultant in business strategy consulting and was team member on projects in ophthalmic goods, agricultural chemicals, and nylon intermediates industries. |

In 1983, Henry joined Quantum Corporation, a Fortune 500 Winchester disk drive company where he held a variety of product management and marketing positions culminating in Vice President of Marketing and Business Development for $100 million subsidiary, Plus Development.
In 1997, Henry was appointed Assistant Professor at the Harvard Business School, a joint appointment in the Technology and Operations Management area, and in Entrepreneurial Management.
He was responsible for the second year elective course in Managing Innovation.
In 2003, Henry joined the Haas Business School as Executive Director of the Center for Open Innovation. In this position, he directs the Center for Open Innovation that is focused on research and teaching on the impact of intangible assets and globally distributed knowledge on firm strategy and industrial innovation. He is doing research in innovation. More specifically, Henry is interested in organizing, structuring and managing internal and external research and development. Furthermore, he is specialized in technology-based spin-offs, corporate venture capital and managing intellectual property.
Henry is Executive Board Member of Epilepsy.com, a patient-oriented website dedicated to patients and their families who seek information to help them live with epilepsy and is a Member of Board of Directors, The Epilepsy Project, a public charitable research fund, seeking to catalyze more rapid commercialization of promising research in epilepsy and related neurological areas.
Henry is also Mentor and Advisor to Innovent, a Nokia company and early stage investor in telecommunications-related start-up companies, and a conduit for those startups into Nokia, as well as a window for Nokia onto emerging technologies and markets.
Henry is author of a number of refereed research articles and the author of "Open Innovation" (HBS Press, 2003) which was awarded Best Business Book of 2003 by Strategy & Business Magazine. He is also editor of a new, more academic oriented book "Open innovation: Researching a New Paradigm" (OUP, 2006 - co-edited by Wim Vanhaverbeke and Joel West), and of the book "Open Business Models" (HBS Press, 2006). |
