Interpretable Artificial Intelligence: Does it Work as Advertised?
Dan Goldstein, Principal Researcher at Microsoft (+Bio)
Abstract: Important decisions that used to be made by humans are now being made by AI systems. Concerns about vital decisions emanating from black boxes has led to a renewed interest in interpretable AI systems, those that expose the grounds on which they are deciding. He will present and test the predictive accuracy of a simple method for creating interpretable decision making rules and the results of a battery of studies aimed at determining whether interpretable models achieve their intended effects on human users. In particular, he will test the degree to which people can anticipate the results of interpretable models, trust their predictions, and spot their mistakes. |

Data-driven Artificial Intelligence Decision Automation in Research and Economy
Prof. Dr. Michael Feindt, Founder & Chief Scientific Advisor of Blue Yonder, Inventor of #NeuroBayes at CERN, Professor at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (+Bio)
Abstract: Broad application of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning no longer is a question of "if", but just a matter of "when".
He will show several examples of data-driven decision optimization and automation from top-notch fundamental research at
particle colliders up to automation of supply chain, pricing and targeting for real-life retailers that already show superhuman
performance. He will also show that next to "angst" human cognitive biases are the main obstacles for a faster adoption.

Practice Workshops: The Data-Driven Challenges
Governance: Data is a new resource in organizations, not only to analyze existing models and search for efficiency but to create new products and new business models. This requires new structures like data hubs, new executive functions such as chief data officers and new functions like data engineers, business analysts and data scientists. In this panel we will explore challenges and opportunities of governance.
With Raul Cruces, Global Senior Data Manager at Banco Santander; Ramon Morote, Chief Data Officer at Gas Natural Fenosa.
The workshop will be conducted by Xavier Busquets, Associate Professor of the Department of Operations, Innovation and Data Sciences at ESADE.
Business models: Advances in data collection and analysis have enabled organizations to know more and better about the markets they compete in. This new-found insight brings many challenges and opportunities, including one that is near existential: “What business are we really in?” This panel will explore how technology is enabling firms to boost—and at times even transform—their business models.
With Richard Benjamins, Data & AI Ambassador at Telefónica; Marta Baches, Manager HP Instant Ink at HP Printing Solutions.
The workshop will be conducted by Marco Bertini, Associate Professor and Director of the Department of Marketing at ESADE.
Decision-making: Decision-making is the bread and butter of executives. But the rise of big data and smart technologies has created a very different decision environment with many new decision inputs. The successful companies of the future need to develop a new perspective on decision-making that combines human with artificial intelligence. This panel will analyze various cases from companies that are leading the way.
With Marco Bressan, Chief Data Scientist at Satellogic; Juan Murillo Arias, Head of Analytical Dissemination at BBVA Data&Analytics; Xavier Guardiola, Data Science Team Lead at King.
The workshop will be conducted by Bart De Langhe, Associate Professor in the Department of Marketing at ESADE. |

Making the invisible visible through data: actionable insights for the most vulnerable children
Clara Palau, Technology Lead, Office of Innovation at UNICEF (+Bio)
Pedro A. de Alarcon, Head of Big Data for Social Good at LUCA Data-Driven Decisions (Telefónica Data Unit) (+Bio)
Abstract: New sources, types, and methods of collecting big data and real-time information mean new – and faster – ways of analyzing the world. We now have an opportunity to harness these new sources of information for social good. Data can provide the global community, governments and international organizations like UNICEF with critical insights into the needs of vulnerable populations, and where best to invest the scarce resources. During this session we will introduce and demonstrate practical examples of how data can have a global impact and provide insights to humanitarian programs, from responding to emergencies such as epidemics or earthquakes in a faster way, to understanding vulnerabilities to reach the Sustainable Development Goals.
